VeriTest publishes a comparative study of Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro and Panda Software antivirus solutions for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
-In all the tests carried out in the comparative study, Panda's solution proved to be the one that has the lowest impact on the performance of Exchange Server 2003
- In terms of the CPU usage, the tests demonstrated that Panda ExchangeSecure only uses 10.89percent more than when the server does not have any protection installed, a much lower percentage than the products of Trend Micro (17.84%), McAfee (34.76%) and Symantec (39.3%)
09/27/06.- A study carried out by VeriTest®, the testing service of
Lionbridge Technologies, has confirmed that Panda ExchangeSecure, the antimalware solution for Exchange mail platforms, has a minimum impact on the performance of these servers. The products evaluated in this comparative study, apart from the Panda Software solution, were Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 5.0.2, McAfee GroupShield for Exchange 6.0 and Trend ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 7.0.
The tests focused on evaluating the CPU usage compared to a server without antivirus protection installed, the average number of messages stored in the send queue and the average waiting time for clients.
As regards to the CPU usage, installation of the Panda Software solution only resulted in an increase of 10.89 percent. The rest of the products resulted in a much larger increase in CPU usage: Trend Micro 17.84%, McAfee 34.76% and Symantec 39.3%. Â Similar results were obtained for the number of messages stored in the send queue. With the Panda Software solution installed, the increase in the number of messages stored in the send queue was just 3 messages (18.03% compared to a server without protection), whereas the Trend Micro solution slowed down by 7 messages (41.92%), the Symantec solution by 4,959 messages (28,962.86%), and the McAfee solution 20,941 messages (122,296.05%).
Panda ExchangeSecure also proved superior as regards client waiting time, as the increase in client latency with ExchangeSecure installed compared to a server with no antivirus solution was just 10 milliseconds (4.93%). The latency time with the other products installed was superior as compared to Trend Micro 24 milliseconds (11.54%), Symantec 589 milliseconds (283.17%) and McAfee 1059 milliseconds (508.89%).
The VeriTest study was designed to demonstrate the performance impact of the presence of the different security solutions for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 on the market. The methodology involved first determining the performance of a server with no security solution installed. With this as a benchmark, the impact on system performance of each of the tested products was then measured.
Microsoft MAPI Messaging Benchmark 3 (MMB3) was used to carry out the tests.
Finally, the VeriTest team concluded, "We found Panda ExchangeSecure 3.0.2 demonstrated the best performance among the four antivirus solutions evaluated in this study."
